Amazing-Grace Ahuoyiza Ebiebi Salami, an 11-year-old student from Greenpath Preparatory School in Abuja, has emerged as the National Champion of the inaugural Spelling Bee in Nigeria (SpIN) competition. This remarkable achievement marks a significant milestone, as Nigeria will be participating in the prestigious Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States for the first time.
The Spelling Bee in Nigeria competition, organized in collaboration with the U.S. Consulate, brought together 64 outstanding finalists from various states, including Abuja, Lagos, Osun, and Taraba. The event was attended by a distinguished audience, comprising diplomats, corporate executives, educators, and proud parents.
Amazing-Grace demonstrated exceptional spelling skills and resilience, correctly spelling the final word “Melange” to clinch the championship title. As the National Champion, she has earned an all-expense-paid trip to represent Nigeria at the 100th edition of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States.
The Spelling Bee in Nigeria competition aims to promote literacy, public speaking skills, and critical thinking among young learners. The initiative has received widespread acclaim, with Acting U.S. Consul General JoEllen Gorg praising the competition’s impact on promoting academic excellence and a love of the English language.
Eugenia Tachie-Menson, the convener of Spelling Bee in Nigeria, emphasized the significance of the competition, stating that it has inspired a generation of Nigerian students to aim for global excellence.
