Bayelsa State Governor, Sen. Douye Diri, was visibly moved to tears during a poignant tribute night for his late deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo. Diri described Ewhrudjakpo as more than just a deputy, but a brother, friend, ally, and compatriot who shared his vision for Bayelsa State.
In a heartfelt speech, Diri announced plans to publish a compendium of Ewhrudjakpo’s wise proverbs, saying, “His words were always laced with wisdom and wit.” The Governor’s voice cracked with emotion as he recalled Ewhrudjakpo’s dedication to Bayelsa’s development.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan and Senator Seriake Dickson also paid emotional tributes, praising Ewhrudjakpo’s selflessness and commitment. Jonathan described him as a “true leader and a gentleman,” while Dickson recalled his infectious laughter and kindness.
The state government has declared three days of mourning, with flags flying at half-mast. Ewhrudjakpo’s sudden passing on December 11, 2025, has left a void in Bayelsa’s leadership. His contributions to education, healthcare, and infrastructure will be remembered.
As Bayelsa bids farewell to a dedicated leader, the people mourn the loss of a true champion.
