Nigerian singer and songwriter Simi has addressed the recent backlash over a series of old tweets that resurfaced on social media, sparking heated discussions among fans and critics alike. In a candid statement, Simi clarified her intentions behind the tweets and set the record straight on her stance regarding sensitive issues.
In her words, Simi said, “I haven’t been on Twitter today – but someone brought a few of my old tweets to my attention and I can’t not address it. 14 years ago, I was 23, so I was definitely not a child. I’m not here to make excuses because I don’t have anything to make excuses for. What I can’t let anyone do is twist my story to fit false narratives.”
Simi explained that in 2012, she was living and helping out at her mom’s daycare while pursuing her music career. She mentioned that she used to tweet about everything happening in her life, including interactions with kids at the daycare. “Kids can be mischievous. If a child did something I found funny, I tweeted about it. Kids are cute and lovable. I want to hug, kiss, and cuddle them. I tweet about it. Nothing I tweeted was from perversion,” she stated.
The singer emphasized that at the time, she wasn’t famous, and thus, didn’t consider how her words could be interpreted or potentially twisted by others. “I’ve never been depraved in my life. You can retweet all the tweets in the world about me loudly crushing on people I admire/d. Or being a cheeky young woman. I wasn’t trying to hide it, because I don’t have anything to hide,” Simi added.
Simi also addressed the deletion of some of her old tweets by her team, citing sensitivity for her family as the reason. She admitted she was initially hesitant about deleting them, stating, “My team has been deleting some of my tweets because of how sensitive it is for my family. To be honest, I did not want to.”
Reaffirming her stance on serious social issues, Simi said, “I have always spoken against rape and sexual assault even before you knew I existed. It’s not a costume I’m wearing, it’s who I am. I’ve never claimed to be perfect. I’ve never claimed to know everything. I said stop raping women. I stand by it.”
Simi’s response comes after Nigerians on social media reacted strongly to the resurfaced tweets, with some interpreting them in ways she claims are false and misleading. By addressing the issue head-on, Simi aims to clarify her intentions and maintain her integrity as a public figure.
