The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make public the academic certificates and other credentials submitted by all candidates seeking elective offices across the country.
Obi argued that such a move would promote transparency, accountability, and public trust in Nigeria’s electoral process. According to him, making candidates’ credentials accessible would enable Nigerians to verify the qualifications of those aspiring to lead them and reduce controversies surrounding election eligibility.
The proposal has sparked conversations among political stakeholders and members of the public, with many describing it as a step toward strengthening democratic institutions. Supporters believe greater openness would enhance confidence in the electoral system, while others say the idea would require careful implementation to protect personal information where necessary.
As preparations for future elections continue, Obi maintained that transparency remains a key pillar of credible democracy and urged INEC to adopt measures that reinforce the integrity of the electoral process.
The call adds to ongoing national discussions on electoral reforms aimed at improving accountability, fairness, and citizens’ confidence in Nigeria’s democratic system.
