The Bayelsa State Government has approved the removal of the paramount ruler of Swali community, His Highness Chief Wilcox Job Seiyefa, from the Ebeniken chieftaincy throne over persistent insecurity within his domain.
Governor Douye Diri gave the approval following concerns about the security situation in the community, underscoring the government’s determination to hold community leaders accountable for maintaining peace and order in their respective areas.
According to reports, the decision was taken after authorities assessed the increasing security challenges affecting Swali community. The government believes that traditional rulers play a vital role in supporting security agencies through intelligence gathering, conflict resolution, and community leadership.
The removal of the monarch sends a strong message that traditional institutions are expected to actively contribute to efforts aimed at protecting lives and property. It also reflects the state’s commitment to tackling insecurity through greater responsibility and collaboration between government officials, traditional leaders, and residents.
While reactions to the decision have been mixed, with some describing it as a bold step and others calling for further investigation into the circumstances, the Bayelsa State Government maintains that safeguarding public safety remains its top priority.
The development is expected to spark wider discussions on the responsibilities of traditional rulers in addressing insecurity and strengthening peace at the grassroots level across Nigeria.
