The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has named former Minister of Transportation and ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi as the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 presidential election.
According to a post by Punch Newspapers, the ADC says the pairing forms a “unity and re…” ticket aimed at consolidating opposition strength ahead of the polls. The announcement was made just hours ago and is already generating heavy engagement online, with over 2.1K reactions and 757 comments.
Amaechi Joins the ADC Ticket
Rotimi Amaechi served as Minister of Transportation from 2015 to 2022 under the APC administration and was Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and Governor of Rivers State for 8 years before that. His political base in the South-South and experience at federal level are expected to balance Atiku’s North-East roots and long-standing presidential bids.
The two leaders were pictured together shaking hands, signaling the formalization of their alliance under the ADC banner.
2027 Race Takes Shape Early
With the Independent National Electoral Commission yet to release the official timetable, major parties are already positioning their tickets. Atiku Abubakar, who ran for president in 2019 and 2023 under the PDP, now appears set to lead the ADC ticket in 2027 with Amaechi as his deputy.
The ADC has been positioning itself as a platform for a broad opposition coalition. By picking Amaechi, the party signals its intent to pull votes from the South-South and appeal to voters focused on infrastructure and economic reform.
